Our History

The first Oklahoma Lutheran camp was held in 1928 and called "Summer Conference Camp of the Oklahoma District Walther League".  This was held for 3 years, skipping 1930, at Heart-O-Hills' camp near Welling OK. The first permanent campsite was purchased in 1933, consisting of 30 acres at Standing Rock along the Illinois River. Rev. Louis Theimer served as the first dean of camp.  It started as a camp where Walther Leaguers came to fellowship together and hear God’s Word in natural settings. Rev. Walther Haefker began as director in 1937.

The Big Move East of Tahlequah

Lutherhoma moved to its current site in 1950 when the Illinois River was dammed to create Lake Tenkiller.  Many of the buildings were moved from the old site to its current location east of Tahlequah.  Some additional buildings were acquired, including an old army chapel, from Camp Gruber, which became the present dining hall. Smaller cabins and the caretakers's home were moved intact from the old site. All was finished and ready for summer camp in 1951. The first family camp was held at the new site in 1954. Theimer Hall, the first winterized retreat building, was dedicated in 1962.

Camp Lutherhoma in the 70's and 80's

In 1968 the ownership of the property was transfered from the Walther League to the Oklahoma District-LCMS. In 1978 the LOMA was formed, with inter-Lutheran leadership. In 1981 the first swimming pool was built.

What's happened since 1988

The Oklahoma District disbanded the LOMA in 1988. At the OK Dist. LCMS convention that year a resolution was passed to support Lutherhoma with it's finances and by calling a full time camp director. In 1989 the camp welcomed John Busch and his family as director, and Daniel Overman and his family as caretaker. Two new bathhouses wer built, one in each cabin area. Programming was increased in the non-summer months. The Group Initiative Course, or challenge course, was begun, which attracted many retreat groups and summer campers. We buld the new deck, store and upper room meeting area which has provided camp with a central location for all our guests and participants. The old director's house has been the camp office for many years, but was also recently upgraded through an eagle scout project which helped paint the inside and outside, and transformed the main room into a comfortable meeting space.

Several annual programs now are well established as part of our ministry. Journey In January, our winter high school retreat, has been attended by an average of 100 youth and adults for 27 years. The Oklahoma District, LCMS now conducts its Junior High Youth Gathering, JOY, at Camp Lutherhoma each fall. Memorial Day weekend offers our annual Work Weekend for cleaning and preparing camp for the busy summer. Once again, the tradition of the Labor Day Family Camp is a favorite event for many friends, families, and newcomers. Over the years other programs provided ministry opportunities to a wide variety of guests, such as our Renformation camp, Adventure trips, Homebrew retreats, couples retreat, and much more. Plenty of new ideas always are in our thinking and planning. Let us know how you would like to join in.

Capital Campaign: His Promise, His Plan, His Future

Starting in 2004, the fundraising campaign was begun to address many pressing needs in the facilities. The campaign raised a total of $1.3 million in donations and pledges. With it camp built a new state of the art swimming pool and our two high comfort retreat cabins, Pine and Aspen. The blessings that were given us by God were beyond imagination, and camp never has gone into debt due to the wonderful blessings and support of our friends.

Other Improvements and Blessings

In the past 10 years we have also made many improvements to our facilities. Through the Garbe estate we were able to completely rebuild all 10 of the summer cabins, now with full year climate control and new bunk beds. We also were able to build a new crafts cabin in Area B, which serves as summer crafts and year round as another good sized meeting space.
